The U's responded to their midweek relegation by putting in a solid performance against Leicester City on Saturday.

Far from being downhearted by their drop into League One, the U's started solidly before becoming more adventurous after the interval and looked like they might record their first back to back victories of the season.

Kevin Lisbie scored with a deft header fifteen minutes from time and it looked like the Foxes might be dragged further into trouble, but a late, late Hume equaliser grabbed a point which might prove crucial in three weeks time.

Whilst disappointed not to have held on, boss Geraint Williams would have taken great solace by his team's response to their new league status.

The U's have named an unchanged eleven for the match against Leicester City on Saturday.

Boss Geraint Williams has stuck with the side that beat Ipswich as the U's play for the first time since relegation on Wednesday night.

The early exchanges were pretty even, although the U's were on the defensive with City's three up top giving the visiting defence work to do.

The first real chance arrived on ten minutes as the ball was sent to the far post for Howard to knock back

He nodded across goal towards Campbell and it required brave defending by Gerken as he clawed the ball away from under the bar to prevent the Foxes striker getting to it.

The home side then had two long range shots at the edge of the box which were both deflected as the ball pinged around and was eventually hacked clear.

The Foxes again went close on fourteen minutes as Campbell escaped the offside trap down the City left and seemed destined to score, only for Gerken - who had paused initially - came out to block with a fine save as he closed the angle.

The U's began to take the sting out of the game with a brief spell of possession of their own, but were relieved to see Heath turn the ball the right side of the post for a corner on 19 minutes.

From the resultant set piece, the ball dropped off Howard's head into the six yard box and the back four twice put in crucial tackles as the home side sought a path through the bodies into the back of the net.

The U's were under the cosh, but always had the threat of Lisbie and Elito's pace with the out ball and the latter nearly got in on 22 minutes as a ball over the top saw the winger almost get beyond Kisnorbo, only for the linesman to flag him for a foul.

Lisbie nearly got the ball off Stearman on 24 minutes, but could only watch as the Foxes broke down the other end, with Coyne coming in with a crucial header.

The U's then had their best chance of the half on 29 minutes as Hammond broke from midfield and lay the ball out wide to Vernon.

His cross was low and a peach and Lisbie was within inches of turning it home - unfortunately he was inches offside as well and the chance wouldn't have counted anyway.

The nerves were starting to increase around the home crowd, particularly in light of scores going against them around the country as the half wore on.

Those nerves were shown on 35 minutes when Hammond broke into the box and lay it out to Elito. The winger's cross was blocked by N'Gotty, but he showed great uncertainty as the ball lingered in the six yard box with Lisbie in the danger area.

The U's were finishing the half in good shape, as they had pressure of their own around the Foxes area, with Duguid almost getting in on a cross from White at the far post.

However, they were again indebted to Gerken at the end of the half as the keeper was again quick off his line to get out to Campbell who sprung the offside trap and clear the ball off the striker's toes.

Halftime was greeted by boos from some City fans and hail from the skies, and that weather had left the pitch very heavy as the second half got underway.

The U's started the second half in decent fashion, and almost got in on goal as Lisbie was just denied by a toe poked tackle by Kisnorbo on the edge of the box.

However, the home team had the ball in the back of the net eight minutes after the restart as Hayles flicked a header home, only to be denied by the linesman's flag as the officials cut the celebrations short.

It was a rare sight of goal for the home side after the break and frustrations were starting to rise in the stands as they urged boss Holloway to introduce Iain Hume from the bench.

On the rare occasions that the Foxes did get in behind the visiting defence, Gerken was exemplary with both his handling and his decision making at the key moments.

The U's had not offered much going forwards but had a good sight of goal midway through the second half.

A really well executed move found the unmarked Lisbie on the edge of the box and he drilled in a shot that just clipped Clemence on its way through, forcing a fine safe out of Henderson.

That was followed shortly afterwards by another shot by the U's as the ball was worked back to Hammond twenty-five yards from goal and his shot was also deflected, thankfully wide for the home side.

Holloway decided it was time to make a change and introduced both Hume and Fryatt for the final twenty minutes.

The two subs could only watch on initially as the U's continued their best spell of the game, with the home defence twice giving the ball away as the nerves continued to rattle.

The new boys had fresh legs though and Hume escaped the attentions of U's sub Izzet to bear down on goal and an excellent City move ended with Duguid putting in a goal saving tackle right at the key moment.

And that tackle proved to be crucial as the U's took the lead two minutes later.

Jackson had been moved out to the left to accommodate Izzet only minutes earlier, and he delivered a sumptuous cross for Lisbie to get inbetween two defenders to flick a deft header past Henderson and into the back of the net.

The U's went close again a minute later as Jackson struck in a shot after a good bursting run from Hammond which was again blocked at the last moment.

Hendrie went into the book nine minutes from time for dissent as the frustrations of the afternoon got to the midfielder.

The back line kept the home side at bay until four minutes from time when first Stearman headed narrowly over the bar before Fryatt got in one on one with Gerken.

The striker twisted this way and that as he tried to work a position for a shot and seemed destined to score before a late, late U's intervention ensured it skipped away from goal.

The home team were piling forwards now and had nine men up front for the dying stages.

And it paid dividends with just sixty seconds left as the ball did eventually hit the back of the net. Hume stepped forward onto a flick on and stooped low to head the ball home past Gerken.

The U's should have then found a crucial winner deep into injury time as the ball was worked from left to right.

First Lisbie had a half sight of goal but opted to lay it out to Jackson. From a narrow angle, he drove the ball wide of goal.

With City piling forwards, the U's then again broke away through Ifil and he crossed delightfully for Lisbie to head towards goal, only for it to drop agonisingly over the crossbar.
