There was a repeat of last year in the first round of the Carling Cup for the U's as Shrewsbury beat them 1-0 after extra time, with Johnnie Jackson missing a late spot kick that would have taken the game to a penalty shoot out.
Kempson put the home side ahead in the second period of extra time after a disappointing ninety minutes that produced few bright moments for the travelling U's fans.
There were three changes of personnel in the U's starting line-up, with John White, Danny Granville and Luke Guttridge beginning the match.
Teddy Sheringham, Matt Connolly and Kem Izzet were the three players stepping down, with Izzet and Connolly taking two of the places on the bench alongside Mark Cousins, Anthony Wordsworth and Tom Webb.
The home side made numerous changes to the side that won convincingly 4-0 at Lincoln on Saturday afternoon, suggesting that the league is Gary Peters' priority.
Geraint Williams would probably agree but with four injury victims back at Layer Road, there was only limited scope for rotation at New Meadow.
With the sun dipping low in the distance, the hosts kicked off the first competitive game at Shrewsbury's new stadium but it was the U's who get forward first, but Clive Platt strayed offside from George Elokobi's through ball.
This was as near to any action in the first fifteen minutes as both sides struggled to find too much cohesion in their play.
It was in the fifteenth minute that the U's had the first shot of the game, Clive Platt having his effort well blocked by a covering defender.
This was followed five minutes later with George Elokobi getting forward before rifling his long range effort over the bar.
Good work by Kevin McLeod had resulted in a low cross being cleared to the powerful left back but the shot didn't come near to troubling Esson in the home goal.
Shrewsbury came within inches of scoring the first competitive goal at New Meadow when the crossbar came to Dean Gerken's rescue in the twentieth minute.
A long throw from the right was flicked goalwards by Drummond but bounced off the bar before going behind for a goal kick.
Seconds later, Luke Guttridge pulled his shot wide after a great first touch put the ball in exactly the right place for him to hit a right foot effort.
This was quickly followed by two U's efforts clearing the crossbar, a Johnnie Jackson volley flew over before Platt repeated this with a right footed shot.
While the U's were carving out half chances, it was Gerken in the U's goal who was doing most to keep the score goalless in the first half.
He was at his best after thirty six minutes as he instinctively stuck out a hand to clear a firm header from a Shrewsbury corner.
This was the last action of the half and Geraint Williams would probably not been as happy as his opposite manager, Gary Peters as the two sides went in at the break with the score at 0-0.
Whatever Gary Peters said to his players seemed to do the trick in geeing them up and it was the hosts who looked the more positive in the early exchanges of the second period.
They tried to push the U's back but the quality in the final third wasn't equal to their build-up and it was an event free opening to the second half.
The U's did break on the hour mark as Guttridge got into a shooting position but dragged his left foot effort wide of the post.
The hosts were back in the U's penalty area on sixty seven minutes as Onibuje headed wide. The U's made their first substitution as Anthony Wordsworth replaced Mcleod.
The only action of any note in the remainder of the ninety minutes came eight minutes before the end as Mark Yeates shot went wide after cutting inside from the right.
The referee blew for full time, meaning extra time for Geraint's men.
There wasn't a lot of action in the first half of extra time but within a minute of the second period, the hosts took the lead through defender Darren Kempson.
A poor clearance from left back George Elokobi led to a throw in being conceded and a long throw into the near post area was headed home by Kempson.
The U's were given a lifeline when Kem Izzet was fouled five minutes from the end but Johnnie Jackson had his spot kick saved by Esson, who dived to his left to make the crucial save.
The home side saw out the last five minutes without too much trouble and in a repeat of last year's first round, the U's fell to lower league opposition in the First Round.
