U's Reserves Draw Once Again
A Jamie Guy double saw the U's reserves earn their eighth draw in nine fixtures this season.
The U's second string have made a habit of sharing the spoils in 2007/8 and Tuesday was no different as they drew 2-2 with Northampton Town.
For both goals, the powerful Guy showed excellent composure to score but his efforts were cancelled out by a brace for the visitors by Adebayo Akinfenwa.
The visitors should have taken the lead after just four minutes, when a goalmouth scramble saw Goodall presented with a golden chance from less than six yards out, but Cousins recovered well to block his shot.
Sights of goal for the U's were rare in the early exchanges and their first clear sight of goal came when they opened the scoring.
Guy escaped the offside trap and took his time in waiting for Cobblers keeper Dunn to commit himself, eventually tucking home to the goalkeeper's left.
The lead was to last just five minutes, as the visitors equalised after winning a disputed corner.
It appeared that McLeod had headed away from danger, but the linesman gave the set piece and Akinfenwa rose highest to head home past Cousins.
Both teams traded chances but it was not until the second half that the scoring resumed.
The visitors got their noses in front this time, with Akinfenwa controlling a through ball well and then slotting the ball home with a firm right footed finish.
Again, the advantage was to last only a matter of minutes as Guy grabbed his second of the game.
Breaking into the box down the left hand side, he drew the goalkeeper out of position, rounded him and pushed the ball home into the empty net.
There was to be no more goals for the U's, but the good news was that Pat Baldwin appeared to come through his afternoon's work unscathed, being substituted after 70 minutes at the back.
It was not such good news for West Ham defender Robbie Blackwell, though, who ended a competent 75 minutes work with a booking and an injury.
Kevin Watson, Kevin McLeod and Teddy Sheringham all completed ninety minutes and boss Geraint Williams has a pleasant selection dilemma for this weekend's trip to Burnley.
