2008/9 Season Finale Suits Izzet
Posted on: Mon 16 Jun 2008
The fixture list is out and the U's begin with a trip to Hartlepool in their quest for an immediate return to the Championship.
But it is the away match on the final day of the campaign that could be whetting the appetite of the U's fans, especially those who have any belief in fate.
Yeovil Town will host the U's on May 2nd, with memories of the celebrations at Huish Park in May 2006 still fresh in many minds.
It isn't just the supporters who remember that triumphant day in Somerset, the players will no doubt have it down as one of the best memories in their careers.
Kem Izzet was in the U's side that ground out a 0-0 draw to gain the required point for promotion to the Championship.
As soon as the final whistle went, the quality of the game was forgotten with the euphoria of getting to the Championship for the first time in the history of the club taking over, on the pitch and amongst the thousands of travelling U's fans.
On hearing the news about this season's finale, midfielder Kem told CU-FC.com: "With a bit of luck, and a lot of hard work, we can hopefully put ourselves in the same position going to Yeovil as we were two years ago.
"Obviously, it would be great to go there already promoted but if someone was offering the chance to go there needing a point, I would snap their hand off."
Ever since relegation was confirmed, U's boss Geraint Williams has expressed a determination to get back in the Championship at the first time of asking, and Kem reiterated that point.
"All the players were as bitterly disappointed as the supporters were with being relegated and we will be doing all we can to get back in the Championship.
"We've had a good taste of it over the past two seasons and we want to be back playing football at that level as soon as possible."
